Emerald - May Birthstone.

Emeralds are often associated with spring, anniversaries, and loyalty and love. They are actually the rarest of many of the colored gemstones, and they’re much softer than the average gem, so they’re very expensive, but also very desirable. Typically, naturally occurring emeralds are not only pricey, but they’re rare as well.

Emeralds are made when beryllium bubble up from the crust of the earth in veins that are hydro-thermal. They actually get their color from iron, chromium, and vanadium, and the color is a big part of it. Unlike diamonds, the beauty of the emerald is more on the color and saturation than the brilliance, and it’s why it’s the gem that you can decide on by looking at it.

Typically, they’re graded by B to AAA, least to most valuable. The value of the emerald is in color and saturation, and so long as the hardness is consistent, and the clarity and brilliance are less important in this case. The quality is also determined by whether the emerald is created in the lab or naturally.

So, what’s the difference. Well, natural has more inclusions, or visual variants because of the minerals within it, and it has more than other colored stones. Inclusions make them more personal and unique. Typically, natural emeralds from Brazil and Columbia have a much deeper emerald green color.

Lab created ones don’t have inclusions. While some might see this as preferable because they may see them as flaws, these synthetic emeralds are often identical to the ones that occur naturally in terms of the chemical makeup, and they’re similar in appearance, though the color and saturation are actually regarded and changed by the eye itself. These that are man-made have the lack of rarity and detail that the natural ones do, and in many cases, the expected color and saturation is different. It’s important to understand the difference between these two terms. The lab created ones are real emeralds, but they’re not authentic emeralds since they’re made in a lab and they don’t occur in nature.

These lab created ones are less expensive than the natural ones of similar colors, but the price difference is often attributed to the difference in the appearance of it, which does affect the quality. Emeralds of the same quality on the scale, may be deemed less valuable if they have an inferior appearance or a color that’s slightly off.
